BEST IN THE WEST at Cactus Bowl

champs and finalists

Rene Canez and Seth Le picked up double points titles by capturing victories in the Best In The West tournament, in terrific Arizona Conference action at historic Cactus Bowl.

After fifteen all-matchplay games, the top six survivors advanced to a bracket style finals.  In the scratch division, #5 Brendan Bobersky stopped AZ points leader #4 Cesar Padilla with a 2-0 sweep.  In the other match, #3 Cayden Matherly bowled well, but could only stand back and watch as #6 Braxton Sexton blasted 300-265 to advance, with the exciting perfecto being the first of his JBT career.   The top two seeds then came in.  #2 Rene Canez defended his turf by stopping Bobersky, while top seed Dominic Montoya remained solid as he had been all weekend, but fell in a 2-1 dogfight to Sexton, riding the home-crowd wave to the title match.   The momentum ran out for him there, though, as Canez looked as sharp as he ever has, destroying the pins in a 2-0 title match sweep, earning the second title of his JBT career and $800 top prize.

The handicap finals also began with two seeps, as Peyton Lee defeated points leader Isaiah Pino, while Christian Ortega beat another Cactus bowler, Kim Davis.  The win included an oh-so-close 299 game, the second time in two months he's flirted with JBT perfection.  In the semifinal matches, #2 Seth Le was one 'e' short of Peyton Lee, but had no shortage of strikes, sweeping the match.  In the other semi, Miguel Espinoza used a perfect 15-0 matchplay record to grab the #1 seed, but found himself in a dogfight against Ortega, escaping 2-1 to set up the title match.  Both Seth and Miguel continued the excellent bowling, but a tenth frame double won game one for Seth, and re rode that momentum to a sweep, and the third title of his JBT career.  A large brackets haul pushed him over $1,000 in earnings on the weekend, and his hot streak has boosted him all the way up to #7 on the all-conference points list!

A consolation event was held for bowlers missing Saturday's 10-game cut.  Nathan Harnit and Shaiden Raymond bowled great to win their divisions, but the individual highlight was Mason Snow, who connected for the first 300 of his career, yay!  The Brands of Brunswick, our title sponsor, offered three balls, claimed by Cameron Coleman, Canez, and Nathan Bravo.  Harnit, his brother Nicholas, and Jadeyn Mabry all hit the '28' jackpot for a quick $100 bonus each.   Subdivision finals, also with boosted prize funds, were won by Aiden Ruiz-Jimenez with a U17 win over Sexton, and Kendall Bollea, who finished 10th in the main tournament then beat Mabry for the Girls Scratch win.

Big contributions from the Arizona Army National Guard, and Tucson Metro USBC, helped greatly in $7,476 being awarded to bowlers of all skill levels and ages!  Huge thanks to Cactus Bowl for a great hosting job, as well as the tireless Matt Hunt, who went above and beyond to have the center ready, and whose friendliest Mafia in the land put on a great show for everyone.

The field is now set for the 28th annual Arizona Invitational, with 71 qualifiers shooting for $1,000 top prizes, and berths in the prestigious Touring PLayers Championships, All-Star Teams, and Bowler of the Year all on the line!
