BRC Kyrene
champs Cameron Smith and Derek Acuff Cameron Smith and Derek Acuff captured JBT titles in exciting Arizona Conference action at BRC Kyrene Lanes. Derek Acuff opened the 8-person handicap stepladder finals with a big 260 game to oust Tony Marin (227) and Jeff Anderson (190). Derek was almost as good in round two, firing a 239 to defeat Daniel Cotten (211) and Eric Monk (194). Acuff stayed strong in the semifinals, as his 243 was plenty to advance over Eric Roybal (207) and Michael Keller (173) and reach the title match. Top seed Deven Johnston had led the event since game four, but Acuff caught a great look in the stepladder and never let go. He finished off the ladder-climb with a big 253-154 win over Johnston, capturing the second title of his JBT career. Charlie Goulet made his first scratch finals of the season a success with a 236-220 win over 31-time JBT champ Kyle King. Goulet was good again in round two, defeating Labriel Leach 235-215. Leach's day had already been made in the qualifying round, though, as he fired a 300 game, the first of his JBT career and the only perfecto of the day. Cameron Smith then put a stop to Goulet's run in a big way, firing 11 strikes for a 279-186 win and a trip to the title match. Top seed James Hawkins fired 765 in his semifinal set to grab the top seed away from Smith, but struggled to carry in the title match. There was no struggle for Smith, who put on a clinic from nearly the sixth arrow on the drying-out lanes for a 245-198 win and his 12th career JBT title.
