AMF McRAY

champs Cameron Smith & Candace Gardner with Women's Series winner Marina Stever

Cameron Smith added to his impressive title collection, while Candace Gardner tasted victory for the first time, in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action at AMF McRay Lanes.

Labriel Leach began a brilliant climb up the scratch division stepladder finals with a 191-182 win over first-time finalist Andrew Corrao.  Labriel then found a good look in a 241-213 win over Mark Curtis, and dialed it in even more- needing every bit of it- to defeat Travis Johnson 257-247 in a terrific match to advance to the championship game.

Top seed Smith led seven of the eight rounds en route to the top seed, and was able to take over the title game in the second half, eventually cruising to a 221-191 win and the 21st title of his JBT career, now just one behind Andrew Cain for 5th on our all-time titles list.

Lauren Douglas started off her first handicap division stepladder finals in the most dramatic way possible, striking on her fill ball for a 189-188 win over KJ Martinez, who still chalked up yet another finals appearance.  Gardner then took over, beating Douglas 240-214, and following with a 227-186 win over Alex Pellegrino to advance to the finals.

Top seed Marina Stever trailed points leader Pellegrino coming into the day, but despite Alex's excellent tournament, Stever did him one better by leading 7 of the 8 rounds and rolling the high game, earning lots of extra bonus points.   However, it was Gardner who stayed in control of the title match, and eventually won the game 219-202 for the first title of her JBT career.

Stever had already had a winning day though, defeating Jory Koizumi 215-181 to capture the final JBT Women's Series event of the 2010-11 season.  Stever was the only multiple Women's Series winner, turning the trick three times to lead the field into the Girls Invitational this July.  Both regular winners earned $225 for first courtesy of Bowling Dynamics, a terrific sponsor of JBT Arizona Conference events, while Marina picked up $25 for her women's series win courtesy of Impact Bowling, a sponsor of the entire JBT Women's Series.

Thanks as always to the crew at McRay for hosting our event, which awarded over $1,500 in scholarships to bowlers of all ages and averages.  Want in on the fun?  Check out our schedule and come on out to the next open-field JBT event, it's that simple!
