STARLIGHT LANES

champs Paul Carper & Nick Sanchez

Two New Mexico bowlers in the thick of the Bowler of the Year race defended their home turf, picking up important victories in exciting JBT action at Santa Ana Star Casino's Starlight Lanes.

Chris Brown practiced his Houdini act in the scratch division of the stepladder finals, beginning with a 205-199 win over Joe Lewandowski when Joe left a brutal 4-9 in the tenth frame.  Chris and Danny Cobine then engaged in a classic, with Danny striking out for a 238-237 thrilling win.  William Entsminger then beat Cobine 221-173 to advance to the title game.

Top seed Carper had thoroughly dominated the tournament, leading 7 of the 8 rounds.  Though the veteran Entsminger was hungry for another win in his final JBT season, Paul was just too strong, beginning with the front six strikes en route to a 257-223 win, and the 5th title of his JBT career.

In a battle of two of the premier handicap division bowlers this season, Cortez Schenck beat Marina Stever 224-198 to open up their stepladder finals.  Kallista Fritts, having a wonderful first JBT event, then ousted Schenck 223-201.  Jonah Seawright then turned the tables in the semifinals, defeating Kallista 245-184 to advance to the championship game.

Top seed Nick Sanchez, who was the points leader heading into the event, was looking to consolidate that lead with a win, while the resurgent Seawright was having his best JBT event in quite a while.  In the end, it was Nick who came up with the 237-189 win, good for his second career JBT victory.  Both Nick and Paul's wins were huge in the Bowler of the Year Race, giving them 2 each, which is one of the major stats that Bowler of the Year is calculated with.

Thanks as always to the crew at Starlight for making it easy to run a smooth event, which awarded over $1,600 in scholarships to bowlers of all ages and averages.  Want in on the fun?  Check out all the info at our website, and make plans to see us soon!
