WESTERN BOWL

champs Jimmy Ewell & Cerra Strickland

Two more bowlers captured their first JBT titles in exciting JBT New Mexico-Texas Conference action at Amarillo's Western Bowl.

Danny Cobine opened up the scratch division stepladder finals at a blistering pace with a 277-181 win over Labriel Leach, who made the finals thanks to a tiebreaker win over Tim Crites.  Cobine stayed red hot in round two with a 247-211 win over Caleb Goehring, the high Amarillo finisher in the event.  Riley Dempsey, who earlier fired the event's only 300 game, then defeated Cobine 231-203, to advance to the title match.

Top seed Jimmy Ewell, yet another product of the highly successful West Texas A&M program, took over after game seven to lead a JBT event for the first time.  Though it was Dempsey with all the experience, it was Ewell who came through with the 224-206 win, good for the first win of his JBT career.

Cortez Schenck, who won a JBT event on each of the two previous Sundays (in Arizona and Washington), tried for the Sunday three-peat in Texas by opening up the handicap stepladder finals with a 255-173 win over Jonah Seawright.  Schenck then squeaked by Lacey Shelton 185-178.  Cerra Strickland then did what nobody has been able to do lately- beat Cortez- thanks to a 10th frame 5-6 split conversion to win the game 189-180 and advance to the title match.

Top seed Zachary Wojciechowski took over the lead in game seven, and became the longest-named bowler (that we can think of) to appear in a JBT title game.  'Wojo', who also made the finals the day before in Lubbock, hung tough, but a 9th frame washout conversion from Strickland gave her the edge in a 203-184 win, also good for the first title of her career, making it 4-for-4 for first-time JBT winners on the weekend.

Thanks as always to the great crew at Western for hosting our Tour.  Over $1,500 in scholarships were awarded at this event alone, to bowlers of all ages and averages.  Want in on the fun?  Check out our schedule and come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
