Cameron Smith rolled on to another title, while another
JBT veteran tasted victory for the first time, in exciting dual conference
action at Kingman's Cerbat Lanes.
Hawaii's Justin Kanda opened the scratch division
stepladder finals with a 204 game that beat Greg Geering (167) and Robyn Renslow
(195), who had led the early rounds in an impressive performance.
Smith's238 round two effort stopped Kanda (189) and Jakob Butturff (222).
In the semifinals, Smith amped it up to 246, defeating Derek Acuff (215) and
Mark Myers (178) to reach yet another title match.
Top qualifier Dan Hansen had a career day, leading a
scratch event for the first time, helped by the event's only 300 game, tossed
during the qualifying round. He and Cameron engaged in a back and forth
title match. Hansen had a chance to do Cameron dirty with a tenth frame
strike to win, but when he didn't get it, a relieved Smith claimed the 29th
title of his exceptional JBT career.
Amaral began a climb up the handicap division stepladder
with a 183-156 win over Cerell Cardines. Sam then bested Blake Kalaf
198-184, and follwed with a 195-179 win over first time finalist Josh Liebowitz
to reach the title game.
Top seed Alex Pellegrino was looking to break a long
drought, while Amaral was looking for a long awaited first win, and that and
toughening lane conditions seemed to lead to a nervous second half of the title
game. In the end, Sam's tenth frame mark was good for a 192-186 win and
the first title of his JBT career.
Renslow looked to avenge her earlier loss in the
day's Women's Series event, but second qualifier Randi Speiler would have none
of it, staying in control for a 226-193 win, and the second of three wins she
needs to qualify for the 2012 Girls' TPC this July.
