CANYON LANES

champs Wesley Low & Kyle Andrews

Super Bowl Sunday brought out some super scores from our talented bowlers, and in the end Wesley Low and Kyle Andrews claimed landmark victories in exciting Southern California Conference action at Morongo Casino's Canyon Lanes.

Derek Acuff, the previous day's runner-up at Palm Springs, opened up the scratch division finals with a big 279-207 win over Cortez Schenck.  Even though Schenck didn't add to his title collection, he still managed to make JBT history by firing the only 300 game of the qualifying round, which his his third perfect game in as many weeks on Tour, a feat never before accomplished.  Acuff then stayed hot with a 258-226 win over the nattily attired Curtis Lindeman.  A lower scoring but exciting semifinal came down to the tenth frame, with Derek escaping over Harley Sweigart 217-205 to advance to the title game and a chance at redemption from the day before.

Top seed Wesley Low, another preternaturally talented younger bowler, out-struck the entire field, threatening our 5-game and 10-game scoring records before settling for +245 and +444 respectively.   Acuff was hungry for revenge from a tough loss to Low, but his look deteriorated, while Low just kept shredding racks, and the end result was an easy 248-177 win for Wesley.  The doubleheader sweep of the weekend makes Low the 29th bowler in JBT history to win 10 or more titles, and the brackets sweep on the day helped him over $700 in earnings on the weekend!

Handicap scores were very high as well, and Javier Zavala tossed one of the highest in a 290-242 round one win over Trenton Romleski to open the stepladder finals.  He strung strikes again in round two, beating Kennison Andrews 266-194.  Randi Speiler then derailed Zavala 234-193, to advance to the title match.   Speiler had already had a winning day though, beating Brittany Kolatzny to grab the day's JBT Women's Series title.

Even though Kennison led much of the event, his twin brother Kyle passed him, and everyone else, to grab the top seed.  In a well bowled title match, late strikes sealed the deal for Andrews in a 245-230 win, making him one of the few JBT bowlers with 5 or more handicap titles (including the Main Event in December).

Plenty of Super Bowl bonuses were up for grabs all day long.  $30 was won in SuperPower Ball, Cameron Presberg won the Prop Bet contest, and Secilia Kalvelage salvaged a bad day by nailing the exact final score of the Super Bowl, 34-31 Ravens, to win a free entry.  Oh, and Kyle Duster is the man for paying up on his bet (see below).

Nobody else has this much fun while giving away so much!  Want your share?  Check out our schedule and come on out, it's that simple!
