BIG ROCK BOWLING CENTER

champs Cortez Schenck & Zach Harvey

Cortez Schenck made JBT history yet again, while Zach Harvey outscored the field to capture a handicap title, in exciting JBT New Mexico-Texas Conference action at Espanola's Big Rock Bowling Center.

Matthew Tran made his second consecutive scratch finals, beginning with a close 178-173 win over first time finalist Carson Opela.   Tran then turned up the scoring big time, beating previous day's champ William Yoder 256-237.  Danny Cobinethen stopped Tran 248-217 to set up a title match with terrific potential.

Cobine went a whopping +444 on the day, including an 806 semifinal set, which would ordinarily be headline-grabbing numbers, but top seed Cortez Schenck put on the performance of his career, firing 803 in the semis himself to help obliterate the all-time 8-game scoring record, firing +564 to beat the old record of +509.  But no matter what numbers you put up, bowling tournaments usually come down to one game, and Schenck had his hands very full with Cobine.  After some surprising 9-counts, the title match action heated up in the second half, before a tenth-frame 7-pin from Cortez gave him a 228 finish, allowing Danny the chance to strike for the win.  Unfortunately for Cobine, a good-loking hit left a brutal pocket 7-10, and salted away the win for Schenck, the 32nd title of his JBT career and one of the most impressive single-day performances in JBT history!

Isziah Zuni began the handicap stepladder finals with a 221-181 win over Amelia Fasting.  First time finalist Quirino Sanchez then beat ZUni 268-197.  Harvey then edged Sanchez 215-212 to reach the title match.

Top seed Kyle Salazar had already improved on the previous day's fourth place finish, but his quest for a second JBT title was denied by Harvey, who came with a great game in a 238-215 win, earning his third career JBT title with the victory.

Fasting also made the Women's Series title match for the first time in her career, but Bree Vargas was unstoppable among the ladies this weekend, doubling in the tenth frame for a 203-192 win and a Women's Series weekend sweep.

Thanks to the crew at Big Rock for a very fun weekend and great hosting job.  Want in on all this fun and excitement for all ages and averages?  Just check out our schedule and come on down, that's all there is to it!
