HOLIDAY / LEISURE 2-HOUSE EVENT

champs William Yoder & Lacey Shelton

Two Albuquerque veterans opened the new season of New Mexico-Texas JBT competition with victories in the Holiday Bowl / Leisure Bowl dual house event.

After five games of qualifying at Holiday, bowlers moved across the street to Leisure for the semifinals and finals.  Ahkeen Williams began the scratch division stepladder finals with a 186-145 win over first time scratch finalist Dale Coffee.  Cortez Schenck then won round two over Williams 217-204 after Ahkeen left a brutal ringing 10-pin in the tenth frame.  The tables were turned in the semifinals, as this time Schenck was the victim of a vicious ringing-10, giving Yoder a 200-194 win to advance him to the title match.

Top seed Sara Vargas dominated the scratch division like no female bowler has in quite some time, leading seven of the eight rounds by a considerable margin.  However, the title match proved to be a tight one with both William and Sara bowling very well.  After Yoder filled 29 pins in his tenth frame, that left Vargas needing to strike out to tie.  The stubborn 10-pin proved to be her downfall as well, as when her first ball didn't strike, Yoder claimed his second career JBT title with the 227-214 win.

Newcomer Aiden Connors began the handicap division stepladder finals with a 206-203 squeaker win over Barrett Meigs.  Lacey Shelton then took over, defeating Connors 262-177, and following with a 251-203 victory over Taylor Williams to move on to the title match.

Top seed Amelia Fasting was enjoying her best-ever JBT performance, but struggled in the title match as many first-timers do.  The veteran Shelton took advantage, winning the game 192-168 for the fourth title of her JBT career.

Vargas got some revenge in the Women's Series title game, defeating Adel Wahner 202-142 for the first of three Women's Series crowns she needs to get into the 2014 Girls TPC.

Thanks to the great folks at both Leisure and Holiday for their cooperation in making the unique two-house format a smooth success.  Over $1,000 in scholarships were earned- want your piece of the fun?  Check out our schedule and come on down, that's all you have to do!
