RED ROCK LANES

champs Russ Oviatt & Brooke Martinez

Russ Oviatt and Brooke Martinez opened the 2013-14 Mojave Conference JBT season with exciting wins at Las Vegas' beautiful Red Rock Lanes.

Dallas Leong began the scratch division stepladder finals with a 217-208 win over first time scratch finalist Kyle Andrews.  Eric Hatchett then defeated Leong 255-183.  Oviatt then stopped Hatchett 237-211 to move on to the title match.

Top seed Randi Speiler was the story of the day, making the move up to the scratch division in style, and taking over the lead in the semifinals, averaging over 230 for the day.  She was looking to become the first female scratch division winner since last November, but Oviatt, a talented South Dakota bowler going to school at ASU, had other ideas.  His double in the tenth frame sealed a 235-226 win over Speiler, good for his first career JBT title.

Leah Glazer opened the handicap division finals with a 251-218 win over Dee Handley.  Glazer continued the high scoring in match two with a 253-241 victory over Cerell Cardines.  Brooke Martinez then stopped Glazer's run with a 237-220 win to move on to the title match.

Brooke's title match opponent was her younger brother KJ, who dominated the event to earn the top seed.  Title matches between siblings always have a little different vibe, and that was the case again as both bowlers appeared a bit sluggish on the fairly high-scoring pattern. The pace picked up in the late frames, though, and in the end Brooke outscored KJ 229-221 for the title, becoming the only two-time winner of the new season so far, and earning her sixth career JBT title.

Speiler dominated the day's Women's Series event, going +173 scratch for the five qualifying games.  She defeated Martinez 237-211 for the title, her first Women's Series win of the season.

Thanks as always to the great crew at Red Rock for hosting our event.  Want in on all the fun?  Check out our schedule and come on out to the next JBT event, it's that simple!
