BOWL EL PASO

champs Cortez Schenck & Chris Ortega, with runners-up Jacob Gill & Hannah Camarillo

Cortez Schenck and Chris Ortega captured JBT titles in exciting TX-NM Conference action at Bowl El Paso.

Angel Ortega began the scratch division stepladder finals with a 206-182 win over Ryan Gose.  Ortega kept it rolling in round two, beating red-hot Adel Wahner 202-180.  Jacob Gill then converted a tenth frame 3-9-10 to defeat Ortega 202-195 and move on to the title match.

Gill is well aware he's running out of time to capture that first career JBT title before he ages out, but top seed Cortez Schenck was not in a generous mood.  He built up a big early lead in the final game, and coasted from there to a 191-166 win, capturing the 53rd title of his JBT career.

Cesar Duran had to be dragged out of bed to come to today's tournament, but made it all the way to the handicap stepladder and then won the opening game 199-180 over newcomer Jeffrey Breining.  Abigail Marquis then continued her best JBT result with a 240-196 win over Duran.  Angel's brother Chris Ortega then stopped Marquis 225-193 to move on to the title game.

Top seed Hannah Camarillo used the biggest of a bunch of big scores in the final round two game to vault into the lead.  The title game against Ortega was low scoring and close all the way.  Chris left a 2-10 split in the tenth, but getting just the two on the second ball was enough for a 194-193 thriller of a win, earning Ortega his first career JBT title.

Bree Vargas defeated top seed Adel Wahner 225-156 to earn the day's Women's Series title.
