DESERT OPEN

champs Ranelle Ulanday & Eric Hatchett

Eric Hatchett of Las Vegas NV and Ranelle Ulanday of Lancaster CA took home the famous glass cactus trophies as champions of the 2016 JBT Desert Open, hosted by Glenfair Lanes.

After fifteen games of matchplay on three extremely challenging patterns, sixteen survivors in each division competed in best of five matchplay down to the final four.   Russ Oviatt led two of the three qualifying rounds to cruise to the top seed, then got past Mathew Adragna and Adel Wahner to reach the semifinals.  His luck ran out there, as Joe Grondin beat him 208-186 to advance to the title match.  #3 Eric Hatchett and #10 Bryan Van Sickle made it through the other half of the bracket.  In the ensuing semifinal match Eric, who had been throwing dead straight to grind out marks and take the brutal shot out of play, switched to a deep, fading hook and it worked brilliantly, as he won 246-159 to move on to the title match.

Grondin, the So Cal scratch Bowler of the Year, has been knocking on the door of JBT major wins, but the veteran Hatchett would slam that door early in this one.  In his final age-eligible JBT event, Eric earned the storybook ending with a 242-171 win, 18th career JBT title, and $500 top scholarship prize.

Mark Sauve was almost as dominant as Oviatt in grabbing the handicap division top seed,  but thumb problems and a tough customer in #16 Victoria Potter proved too much to overcome as Victoria proved victorious.  Ranelle stopped Potter's run in round two, and followed with a 209-196 win over 2014 Desert Open champ Destiny Johnson to reach the title match.  On the other side of the bracket, Ranelle's brother Rieley beat Joshua Molloy, Bex Boyko, and then a 202-193 thriller over TPC runner-up Leah Zweig, to sneak into the title match and play his little (but taller) sister for the title.

The all-sibling title match seemed to be going all Ranelle's way, but Rieley mounted a late frame comeback, culminating in a wild tenth frame.  Needing 20 pins to win and working on a spare, Rieley got the strike on the first ball, but only 6 on the second ball.  Now needing the spare to win, Rieley only got two, and the result was a 178-177 win for Ranelle, her first JBT title, $500 scholarship, and the coveted cactus.  The winners also get free brackets and raffle tickets all next season, with those prizes diverted to Grondin with Eric's aging out.

Huge thanks to Glenfair, one of the most tournament-friendly centers around, for another great job hosting us.  Want in on the best events around for anyone age 21 and under?  Just check out our schedule and come on down!
