Ryan Nikolas and Kerissa Andersen began the 20th season of JBT competition in dominant fashion, earning Pac NW Conference season-opening titles at Secoma Lanes.
Brian Monnette, fresh off his Invitational win to wrap up the previous season, began a climb up the scratch division finals with a thrilling 233-232 win over Kelsey Abrahamsen. Another close game followed against AJ Brockett, who earlier fired the high game of the high-scoring day with a 299. Brian was able to come up with a tenth frame double in that match to seal a 221-211 win. In the semifinals, Tristan Sievers had put on an impressive scratch debut to grab the #2 seed, but couldn't get the double in the tenth he needed to beat Brian, and so Monnette escaped 197-189 to reach the title match.
Nikolas re-took the tournament lead with a big final game in matchplay, and didn't lose any momentum in the long wait as the #1 seed. A mid-game six-bagger keyed a 246-191 win over Monnette, good for the fifth title of his JBT career.
Hannah Russell, like Brian, qualified as the #4 seed for the finals, and like her counterpart won three straight matches in the handicap finals, beginning with a 210-188 win over first-time finalist Tyler Bishop. Hannah then defeated Isaac Richardson 215-196, and followed with a 248-229 win over another finals newcomer, Aidghan Ziegler, to advance to her first title match.
Kerissa Andersen had her best JBT event by far, averaging over 200 in earning the top seed for the finals, but unlike fellow top seed Nikolas, her match with Russell came right down to the tenth. Needing a double to win, Hannah threw a good first ball but the 10-pin stood, and the 200-194 result was good for Kerissa's first career JBT title.
In addition to Abrahamsen's top-5 finish in scratch, she was also the top seed for the day's Women's Series event, and she was able to beat Kerissa 227-181 for the first girls' win of the new season.
