SURF BOWL

champs Cortez Schenck & James McGough

Cortez Schenck began the 'extend the record' era, while James McGough doubled his title total, in exciting JBT action at Surf Bowl in Oceanside.

Anything can (and does) happen in matchplay, and Schenck's path to victory almost got derailed several times.  Austin Gilbert had him beat in the first round, but a pocket 7-10 denied him as Cortez advanced by 11.  Brandon Wanders, always tough on the short patterns, then had him on the ropes, but a tenth frame split let Schenck slip by again.  Cortez then beat the always tough Anthony Cando to advance to the title match.

Eric Hatchett had worked his way through the other side of the bracket, and the match marked their third So Cal meeting in as many months, with them splitting the first two.  There was no doubt this time around though, as Schenck caught a good look on the tough pattern, blasting a 278 for the win, and the 65th title of his JBT career.

Upsets abounded in the handicap division, as the top 3 seeds all lost their first round matches, with #4 losing in round two.  That cleared a path for #10 McGough to win a semifinal against #11 Ryan Langenhorst, while #16 Kaylee Am-Khong ousted #5 Tim Hill by three pins, to set up the title match.

McGough's last win came three years ago, but he bowled like a champ in this title game, defeating Kaylee 217-177, for the second title of his JBT career.

Amanda Atkin continued her dominance in Women's Series events with a 217-148 win over Renee Gentry to capture the day's gir;s' title.

Thanks as always to the team at Surf for a smooth job running our events.  Want in on all this fun for all ages and averages?  Just come on down to our next JBT event- it's as simple as that!
