SURF BOWL

champs Julian Zavala & Avery Domaguin, flanked by Girls winner Stephanie Zavala and U17 winner Solomon Salama

Two impressive runs up their respective stepladders resulted in impressive wins for Julian Zavala and Avery Domaguin, in exciting JBT Southern California Conference action at Surf Bowl in Oceanside.

Zavala began his climb with a 233-145 win over Donovan Koff.  The next round was the match of the day, as Julian and Sergio Torres traded 9s and strikes to a 215 tie, won by Zavala 10-9 in the second tiebreaker shot.  Julian then got past Anthony Cando 234-180 in the semifinal to move on to the title game.

Top seed Cortez Schenck was doing what he so often does- dominating a tournament, leading comfortably since the second game.  However, the title pair was proving to be tricky, especially the right lane, which Cortez had to finish on.  Needing a double, Schenck's first shot went high, and the resulting 201-187 win for Julian finished off the four match sweep and earned him the third title of his JBT career.

Domaguin was just as spectacular on her way up the handicap ladder, beginning with a 202-195 squeaker over Dante Villa.   Avery then cruised past James McGough 239-170 in round two, and fired another 239 in the semifinals to best Jared Schiada's 206 effort, advancing to the title game.

Top seed Sterling Lopez was brilliant all day, as he has been much of the season, but repeatedly left the 3-6, and by the time he had the puzzle figured out it was too late.  Domaguin won again, this time 214-194, earning the second singles title of her JBT career, to go along with the Team event title at the Main Event last month.

Stephanie Zavala, fresh off of making both Junior and Adult Team USA, beat Kaylee Am-Khong to win the day's Girls Scratch event, while Solomon Salama took the U17 crown from Zavala in a high scoring finale.

Huge thanks to Priority Girl Magazing and MSC Inc. for large contributions to the day's scholarship awards, which allowed us to give out more than double what we would be able to on a usual event!  Want in on all of this fun for all ages and averages?  Just check out our schedule, and come on down!
