SHAKE, RATTLE, & BOWL at Cliff Castle Casino

presented by Days Inn Camp Verde

champions Theo Douthit & Jacob Fischer

The tenth season of JBT SW Arizona Conference action got off to a great start with a jam-packed house at Shake, Rattle, and Bowl, and solid victories by a veteran in scratch and a handicap division rookie.

Happy-go-lucky Jerod Florez opened the stepladder finals with a 236 game that was plenty to defeat Brandon Allred (203) and Berman Sae-Aee (191).  Round two looked to belong to Jeremy Medina when he doubled in the tenth, but Florez, now standing in front of the ball return to combat the drying lanes, had other ideas.  He responded with a double in the tenth of his own, and his 204 game beat Medina's 195, as well as Brian Ballard's 187, to advance to the semifinals.

In the semis, Steven Black used his own method to play the drying lanes, using his plastic ball with confidence en route to a 220 game that defeated Kevin Saunders (207) and Florez (150), to advance to the title match.

Top qualifier Theo Douthit had taken the lead away from Steven in game eight, and the title match figured to be a classic matchup of ASU college teammates.  The battle was close early thanks to some bizarre carry from both bowlers, but Theo kept his string rolling longer, and the result was a 230-194 victory, goof for his 4th career victory.

In the handicap division, David Price opened the stepladder finals with a 212, easily defeating Kylee Bonneville's 186, and Alicia Sullivan's 174 effort.

In round two, all three bowlers battled to the finish, but in the end Jacob Fischer (203) just eclipsed fine efforts by Megan Withey (196) and Price (194) to advance to the semifinals.  In that round, Fischer faced more competition but again had just enough in the tanks to get by, as his 221 score just edged Matt Payne (214) and Alex Van Kirk (200), propelling him to the title match.

Fischer faced a tough opponent in top qualifier Cody Mansfield, who had pretty much lapped the field in qualifying.  Cody struggled early on the drying conditions, but eventually found his groove.  Fischer, however, remained steady throughout.  Mansfield could have taken the lead in the tenth, but was unable to get the hit he needed, and in the end Fischer prevailed 236-226, good for his first career JBT SW title in his first-ever event.

$3,118 was awarded to a 115-bowler field.  Thanks as always to Mr. Phil Oates and the great Shake, Rattle and Bowl staff for another fine hosting job, as well as Ms. Tammy Roper and Days Inn Camp Verde for again being our title sponsors for this event.
