GOLDEN PIN LANES

champions Bryanna Caldwell and Steven Pizzi

Bryanna Caldwell came home for the weekend and cleaned up, while Steven Pizzi rolled to a second consecutive win, in exciting JBT SW action at Tucson's Golden Pin Lanes.

Bobby Sherman doubled in the tenth frame of the opening scratch division stepladder finals match en route to a 232, which was good enough to eliminate Savahna Porter (210) and Kris George (200).  In round two, Sherman struggled to a 188 while Jerimiah Wiltfang and Eric Warren engaged in a carry contest.  Jerimiah's late messenger in the tenth proved to be the difference, as he bested Eric 255-237 to advance.  For both Kris and Eric, it was the first scratch finals of their careers after many successful handicap division years.

In the semifinal match, Caldwell, who had been knocked out of the top seed in the final game of matchplay, came on strong with a big 265 to eliminate Wiltfang (175) and Byer (200), and advance to the title match.

Bryanna was already the JBT SW 's all-time leader in female titles, and clearly has sharpened her skills bowling for Central Missouri's intercollegiate program.  However, top seed Grant Sudbeck, enjoying a resurgence of his own on Tour, was just as eager for a title.  Grant had been -73 after three games of qualifying, then averaged almost 240 the rest of the way to grab the top seed.

It was fitting that two of Tucson's best bowlers in recent history battled for the title in the first Tucson JBT SW stop of the season, and equally fitting that the well-bowled match came down to the tenth frame.  Grant threw the first strike in the tenth, forcing Caldwell to do the same to maintain the lead, which she did.  With the pressure back on him, Grant's second ball came up high, resulting in a 223-209 win for Bryanna, good for the 7th title of her tremendous JBT SW career.

In the handicap division, JBT SW veteran Francisco Peralta came up with a 215 effort to eliminate first-time finalists Daniel Cotten (191) and Devon McCormick (183) in the opening stepladder match.

In round two, Justin White threw a clutch double in the tenth frame for a 227 game that just edged out Kayla Frederick (218) and Peralta (183).  The semifinal match was also tight throughout, but in the end Kyle Frederick's 204 defeated White's 196 and Tim Radney's 176, to advance to the title match.

Frederick owns two JBT SW titles of his own, so he wasn't intimidated by the impressive record put up by top qualifier Steven Pizzi.  Steven, the winner at Kyrene two weeks ago, rolled his first 700 series en route to running away with the top seed.  However, he found himself in an exciting dogfight against Frederick, who matched him shot for shot.  In the end, Pizzi had just enough left in the tank for a 214-208 win over Frederick, finishing off the rare accomplishment of back-to-back wins in the handicap division.

113 bowlers shared in over $2,400 in scholarships awarded at the event.  Thanks to Mr. Pete Tountas and his awesome staff at Golden Pin for another great visit to this historic center.
