SUN CITY WEST OPEN at Johnson Lanes

champions JR Monteith & Kylee Bonneville

Another great visit to Sun City West's Johnson Lanes produced victories for JR Monteith and Kylee Bonneville in exciting JBT SW Arizona Conference action.

The scratch division finals opened with Dan Delano rolling a fine 232 to advance over Chris Varholdt (199) and David Johnston (161).  Round two produced one of our highest scoring three-way matches ever, with all three bowlers having a chance to win in the tenth frame.  However, Theo Douthit's double proved to be a winning one, and his 277 game defeated great games from BJ Baker (266 with the front 8!) and Delano (249).  Douthit rolled on in an all-star semifinal match, rolling a 224 do beat Steven Black (174) and Kevin Saunders (210).

Top qualifier JR Monteith, despite great bowling all day, had captured the top seed almost by default when both bowlers ahead of him fell back in game 8.  He and Theo engaged in a playful but intense title match.  A stone-8 in the tenth frame for JR gave Theo a chance to strike in his tenth for the win.  Unfortunately for Theo, his ball came in light, leaving the 3-6-9, and giving Moneith a 216-213 win and his second career JBT SW title.

Chelsea Zemelka continued a fine zeazon by rolling a 244 in round one of the handicap finals over Brandon Longo (186) and Jay Prewitt (172).  The wheels fell off for Chelsea in round two, as she struggled to 184 while Justin White and Taylor King engaged in a slugfest, with White prevailing 263-233.  Bonneville then took over in the semis, firing a 250 to beat White (213) and Eric Vizthum (219), avenging his losses to White in last season's Invitational, and advancing him to the title match.

Top seed Corbin Farris had taken over the event in the semifinal rounds to easily nab the #1 seed.  However, he ran into a determined Bonneville, who was the top seed at this bowling center last year.  Kylee closed out the match with a strike in the tenth frame for a 207-188 win, and a very long awaited first title of his JBT SW career.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2006 JBT SW Arizona Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2006 JBT SW Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Thanks to everyone at Johnson Lanes for being one of our favorite host centers yet again.  Thanks to their fundraising efforts, over $500 extra in scholarships were added to the day's nearly $3,000 total prize fund, shared in by a 112 bowler field.  Please continue to help spread the word about the terrific benefits of bowling JBT SW events!
