BUENA LANES

champs Brandon Allred & Kirk Chui

Brandon Allred broke a long victory drought, while Kirk Chui tasted victory for the first time, in exciting JBT Southern California Conference action at Buena Lanes.

Wesley Low, the little lefty with the powerful bowling ball, opened the handicap finals with a 214-154 win over Daniel Hansen.  Low then rolled on with a 229-186 win over Martika Cabezas, before Chui stopped him 218-186, to reach the title match.

Top seed Jenny Phandanouvong was leading a JBT event for the first time, and was looking to join big brother Foster as a JBT champion.  However, Kirk bowled an excellent game that proved to be too much for Jenny, as he won 228-203 for his first career JBT title.

In the scratch division, Brian Leseberg, the previous day's champion on a house pattern, proved he's just as tough on a difficult condition, leading the event on the PBA Chameleon shot after five games.  But, as so often happens for some reason in this format, bowed out to #16 seed Matt Jones in round one of the finals.  In fact, #3 Michael Cross was the only of the top 4 seeds to survive the first round.

In the round of 8, #8 seed Cameron Smith stopped Jones' run, #13 Allred took out #6 Josh Blanchard, #10 JR Monteith eliminated #15 Danielle Schilling, and Cross defeated #12 Jeremy Glover in three tough games.

In one-game semifinal matches, Allred defeated Smith 225-186, while Monteith beat Cross 218-163 to set up the title match.  That game went back and forth all the way to the tenth frame, where a clutch double by JR forced Brandon to strike for the win.  Allred was up to the task, throwing the hit for the 217-210 win.  It was the fifth title of his career, but his first since his 2006 TPC victory.

71 bowlers competed in the event, so we hope everyone who attended had a great time, and will spread the word about the great benefits of bowling JBT.   Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT So Cal Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to everyone at Buena for a terrific job hosting our event for the first time, their hospitality was top-notch all weekend and much appreciated.  Over $2,000 in scholarships were awarded.  Want in on the fun?  Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
