CACTUS BOWL

champs Greg Garbera & Bryce Techmer

After a start to the season that featured some very low-scoring events, the pins were falling like crazy at Cactus Bowl in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action.

Four 300 games were thrown during the event, a JBT record, one each by BJ Baker, Greg Garbera, Kevin Saunders, and handicap division bowler Bryce Techmer.  Bethany Baker threw the third highest handicap game in our history (338), and the +57 cut was the fifth highest in JBT history.

The scratch division finals opened with Garbera rolling a 236 to get by Saunders (225) and Will McPherson (213).  Greg amped it up to 267 in round two, to defeat Jeremy Medina (213) and Tom Anderson (205).  In a tense semifinal, Greg doubled in the tenth frame for 238 to edge Baker (236) and also beat Shane Peck (who had a 295 game earlier) to reach the title match.

Top qualifier Shawn Whitelaw was easily enjoying his best JBT event ever, while Garbera was looking to climb the ladder for the second time already this season.  A very well-bowled match came down to the tenth frame.  Greg threw three flush strikes, forcing Shawn to double.  Whitelaw's first shot in the tenth was perfect, but left a stone-7, giving Garbera the 232-213 victory, and his 2nd career JBT title.

The handicap division finals (which featured 6 bowlers +300 or better) opened with Robert Atherton (222) defeating Rebecca Bodinet (206) and Jordan Vanderweyst (196).  In round two, Kyle Karpovich came up with a 241 to oust Eric Vitzthum (214) and Atherton (213).   In a great semi, Techmer came up with a 245 to edge Karpovich (241) and CJ Crowley (191).

The title match with top seed Bethany Baker was a real clash of the titans, with Bethany's 338 and Bryce's 300 qualifying them at +391 and +390 respectively.  However, it was Techmer who maintained the momentum in the finale, and although Bethany bowled well, Bryce coasted to a 259-232 win, and his 3rd career JBT victory.

112 bowlers competed in the event.   Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT Arizona Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to Dale Schnell and everyone at Cactus for their usual terrific job hosting our events.  Over $2,400 in scholarships was awarded.  Want in on the fun?  Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
