FORT BLISS

The JBT made its first visit to El Paso's Fort Bliss in a few years, and Stephen Gaucin and Billy Read applauded that move, capturing titles in exciting JBT NM-TX Conference action.

The scratch division finals, featuring bowlers from four states, opened with New Mexican Jerod Florez flowin' to a 224-196 win over Colorado bowler Nathan Shock.  Florez rolled on in round two over Arizona's Labriel Leach 206-181.  Jerod then improved to a 243 in round three, but it wasn't enough as Gaucin came up with a 268 to advance to the title match.

Texas' Gaucin is absolutely deadly when he gets his look, and that spelled bad news for top seed Jeremy Medina, looking for his first title in three seasons.  Despite a solid 207, all Jeremy could do was applaud as Stephen started striking in the second frame- and never stopped, for a 290 game, plenty good for his 7th career JBT title.  The 568 2-game stepladder total has only been surpassed by Jeremy's brother Justin Medina, who rolled 578 last season for two in the finals.

In the handicap division, Brandon Culp enjoyed the home cooking in round one with a 240-224 victory over Jonathan Frederick.  In a thrilling round two, Sara Vargas got by Culp 205-203.  Billy Read then followed with a 232-179 win over Vargas to reach his first title match.

Top seed and Mojave Conference regular Justin King had come all the way from Nevada, but made the most of it by leading a JBT for the first time in impressive fashion.  However, Read picked the biggest spotlight of his young career by coming up with his first EVER 200 game, defeating King 272-236 for his first JBT victory.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to everyone at Fort Bliss for a terrific job hosting our event, which awarded over $1,600 in scholarships, and for the privilege of bowling on their base.
