DESERT LANES
champs Miguel Lopez and William Witt Two bowlers, one a veteran and one brand new, captured their first JBT titles in exciting Arizona Conference action at Fort Huachuca's Desert Lanes. The scratch division stepladder finals opened with Greg Garbera defeating Mike Kremer 238-205. In round two, all bets were on Greg G. as Greg Geering got past Garbera 191-172. The semifinal match was a thriller, as Geering and Kyle King ended in a 193 tie. Both bowlers struck on their first rolloff shot, but after a Geering strike, Kyle came up light for an 8-count, and Greg advanced to the title match. Top qualifier Lopez had a huge semifinals to nab the number one seed, including a front-eight, solid-eight effort in game two. It's rare that two non-winners face each other in an Arizona title match, but that was the case here, and after a few nervous shots it was Lopez who gained his footing best, winning the title 191-175 for his first taste of JBT victory. The handicap finals was all about Witt, as he climbed the ladder for his first career victory. His toughest match was the opener, as he edged Bethany Baker 246-243 in a very well bowled match by both bowlers. He then made a 3-10 split in the tenth to beat his good friend Andrew Stevens 210-204, and then followed with a 244-214 win over Eric Vitzthum (whose back to back third place finishes have rocketed him up the points list) to reach the title match. Top qualifier Daniel Cotten was leading a JBT event for the second time this season, but unfortunately was to suffer the same fate that happened to him last time at Cliff Castle- good shotmaking in the title match but carry suddenly eluding him. In the end, Witt was unfazed by the situation and cruised to a 237-283 win, and his first JBT victory. 64 bowlers competed in the event. Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT Arizona Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division. Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division! Big thanks to Mr. David Wall and the staff at Desert Lanes for hosting a JBT event for the first time in three seasons. Over $1,300 in scholarships was awarded. Want in on the fun? Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
