NM-TX INVITATIONAL
champs Bill Grant & Bailey McFarland Bill Grant and Bailey McFarland captured titles at the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, held at Albuquerque's Silva Lanes. JR Monteith, the current all-conference points leader, led the tough scratch 7-game qualifying round, but had a rough go in the triple-elimination finals, before a much-needed bye got him to round six. The top seeds fared fairly well in this Invite, as JR was joined by 6 of the top 8 seeds in that round. In round six, #2 Stephen Gaucin enjoyed a bye, while #11 Christian Jensen eliminated #4 Christina Waldron; #14 Nathan Shock eliminated #5 Sam Cuevas; #8 Amanda Falk eliminated Monteith, and #13 Grant handed #6 Andy Byer his second loss. Six players remained in round seven. In those matches, Jensen eliminated Shock, Gaucin eliminated Byer, and Grant gave Falk loss #2, putting Bill in the driver's seat as the only one-loss bowler. In round eight, Falk eliminated Jensen (who survived six rounds with two losses!), while Grant eliminated Gaucin, setting up a title match situation where Amanda would have to beat Bill twice to win the title. Falk did the girls proud by reaching the title match, earning her the highest finish by a female in JBT Invitational history regardless of the result. But she faced a tough opponent in Grant, one of the JBT's best in grinding out games on challenging conditions. He did it again in the title match, defeating Falk 196-177 for the title. The win was the 12th in his fantastic JBT career, and greatly helps his Bowler of the Year bid in a very tight race in NM-TX. In the handicap division, qualifying leader Kimberly Amerson held her own through the early rounds of triple-elimination matchplay, getting to round six with only one loss. The match of the whole tournament occurred in round five, where #5 Ryan Scheer and #6 Wendy Shelton engaged in an elimination match. Scheer struck out in the tenth to force a tie, then snuck by in the tiebreaker to survive in a greatly bowled game with great sportsmanship from both players. Down to nine bowlers in round six, #2 Billy Read got a bye, while #7 Dakota Corbell eliminated a drained Scheer, #10 McFarland eliminated #8 Olivia Silva, #13 Sara Vargas eliminated #12 Janeyl Carper, and #9 Braxton Williams handed Amerson loss #2. In round seven, McFarland eliminated Corbell, Williams defeated Vargas, and Amerson defeated Read, leaving five survivors, but all of them with two losses! In round eight, Williams got a bye, while Vargas defeated Amerson, and McFarland eliminated Read. Round nine thus became the semifinal match, and in that game Williams defeated Vargas 231-189 to reach the title game against McFarland. Amazingly, both bowlers still had plenty of energy, in their 16th game of competition for the day, and their respective crowds cheered them on as well. In the end, Bailey cruised to a 225-201 victory, good for the third title of her JBT career, and a whopping $1,000 scholarship prize! 92 qualifiers competed in this event, which awarded an eeeeenormous $7,405 in scholarships- wow! The top 20 season-long point scorers now move on to the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division! Big thanks everyone at Silva for an awesome job hosting the JBT all weekend long. Want in on the fun? Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
