SILVA LANES

champs Dan Romero & Sophie Diaz

It was time for Santa Fe to celebrate on Sunday, as two JBT regulars from the New Mexican capital captured their first titles in exciting action at Albuquerque's Silva Lanes.

Taylor Cruz, who is quietly having an excellent year, opened the stepladder finals with a highs coring 257-249 win over newcomer Matthew Shaver.  Sophie Diaz then defeated Cruz, 201-182, and followed that up with a 228-179 win over Brianna Jaramillo to reach the title match.

Top qualifier Justin Oertel was having a huge tournament in his first JBT event, having easily nabbed the top seed.  Sophie, who found herself in the unusual position of giving pins to her opponent, was more than up to the task, winning the match 233-189, good for her first career JBT title.

The scratch division used our 'PBA' format, with the top 16 bowlers engaging in best 2-of-3 matchplay.  In the first round, top seed Justin Silva was upset 2-0 by #16 Dan Romero.  Silva still had an outstanding day, blowing away the field in qualifying and picking up nearly $200 in sidepots along the way.  The other top 4 seeds survived to the round of 8.

In that round, Romero rolled on with a win over #9 Tom Anderson, #11 Zachary Barnard upset #4 Nathan Shock, #10 Bill Grant defeated #3 Andy Byer, and #2 Justin Medina got by #12 Mathew Gumbrecht.

In one-game semifinal matches, Medina edged Grant 179-166, while Romero beat Barnard 231-186 to set up the title match.

It's not a stretch to say that Romero has struggled in the scratch division in previous events, but has always kept his chin up and learned all he can.  All that persistence paid off in a big way this time, as he rolled his high game of the day to defeat Medina 256-177 and win a long-awaited first JBT title.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to everyone at Silva for a great job hosting our events.  Over $1,615 in scholarships was awarded to a near-sellout 91 bowler field!
