TENPINS & MORE

champs Geoffrey Young & Anthony Herrera

Geoffrey Young and Anthony Herrera captured JBT victories in most unusual fashions in exciting New Mexico-Texas Conference action at Tenpins & More.

Andy Byer, who is always tough on demanding lane conditions, opened up the stepladder with a 234-192 win over Robyn Ashley.  Byer then defeated Brian Weyrauch, who was making a very impressive fifth consecutive scratch finals, 238-179, and followed with a 190-157 win over BJ Baker in a battle of bowlers with 31 career JBT title, to reach the title match.

Top seed Geoffrey Young had dominated the field throughout the day, but knew he was in for a tough match against the veteran Byer.  The title match itself went from low scoring to downright weird halfway through when Geoffrey fouled on a strike in the sixth to fall behind, only to regain the lead when Byer returned the favor by fouling in the ninth.  Young's mark in the tenth ended up being enough for a 178-164 win, good for his 2nd career JBT title.

Scott Wiley made his first JBT finals a success by rolling a 231 in round one of the finals to beat Emily Milbank (181) and Bailey McFarland (176).  Herrera then came up with a big 250 game to defeat Wiley (181) and Blake Brown (147), who made it back-to-back finals on the weekend.  In the semifinals, Herrera's 206 beat Mike Santana (184) and John Stomp (182) to advance to the title match.

Top qualifier Josh Brown, Blake's brother, was looking to make it back-to-back wins on the weekend, a very rare accomplishment in JBT.  However, it was looking bleak as Herrera got off to a hot start in the title match.  Then the tables turned, as Anthony was suddenly unable to mark from the sixth frame onward.  However, the match had one final twist left in store, as Brown, needing a mark to win, unfortunately lost the ball off his hand and it fell in the gutter.  Unable to convert the spare, a stunned Herrera had the 209-207 win, and his first career JBT title.  While obviously disappointed, Josh displayed excellent sportsmanship to Herrera immediately afterwards, a point that should never be lost in the intensity of JBT competition.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks once again to Steve Mackie and the crew at Tenpins & More for another terrific job hosting our event.  Over $1,900 in scholarships was awarded to a near-sellout 91 bowler field!
