WESTERN BOWL

champs Bill Grant and Olivia Silva

Bill Grant and Olivia Silva helped their Bowler of the year causes with big wins at Western Bowl in exciting West Texas JBT action.

Both divisions used the exciting Survivor format, with low-person-out matchplay all the way until only one bowler remains.  The ten survivor scratch division was whittled to four, and in those matches red-hot Jeremy Medina defeated Sam Cuevas 205-165, while Bill Grant eliminated Brian Collier 187-178, to set up the title match.

A challenging condition was laid out, and as almost always, Grant performed very well on the shot.  He dominated the title match as well, winning 194-171, for the eighth title of his JBT career.  The victory keeps his hat in the ring in a very muddled NM-TX Bowler of the Year picture.

24 handicap survovors got chopped down to 8 after three rounds.  In the round of 8, Wendy Shelton defeated Carlos Abeyta 212-197, Silva beat Wendy's sister Lacey, who had been the qualifying leader, 230-194, Jacob Gill ousted Jon Nicholson 220-180, and 10-year old Braxton Williams eliminated Stephanie Barela 209-196.

In the semifinal round, Silva caught fire and beat Shelton 262-186, while Gill defeated Williams 216-165 to set up the final match.

Silva has shown the ability to save her best for last in her previous wins, and she did it again this time, firing another big game in a 257-202 win for her third JBT title of the season, making her a definite Bowler of the Year candidate.

Everyone who finished in the top 5 qualifies for the 2007 JBT NM-TX Invitational Tournament, the regular season's year end event, featuring a guaranteed minimum $1,000 first place scholarship in each division.  Top season-long point scorers also qualify for the 2007 JBT Touring Players' Championship, featuring a guaranteed minimum $2,000 first place scholarship per division!

Big thanks to Mr. Randy Webb and everyone at Western for a great job hosting our event.  Over $1,300 in scholarships was awarded to the field!
