Cameron Smith and Alicia Sullivan captured their third JBT titles each in thrilling "survivor" action at Cliff Castle Casino.
After five greuling games on what proved to be a very tough condition, the top 24 bowlers in each division advanced to our survivor rounds, where the low score on each pair is eliminated until only bowler remains standing.
In the scratch division, Smith qualified third, one of only four bowlers averaging over 200, and kept on surviving into the final six. In that round, Cameron eliminated Bill Grant 194-162, while Kyle King beat JR Monteith 215-202, and Randy Cote advanced 206-200 when Greg Garbera missed a tenth frame spare.
In the next round, the three winners competed for two spots. Smith and King advanced with 204 and 200 respectively, while Cote bowed out in third place with a 170. In the finale, a very determined Smith remained strong, striking in the tenth to seal a 213-201 win, good for his third career win and the early Arizona Conference points lead.
The handicap division was also whittled down to six players, and in that round, Rebecca Meils defeated Daniel Duskin 195-186, Taylor Knight beat Darcie Staggs 220-190, and Sullivan eliminated Shawn Peters 184-181.
In the ensuing three-way battle for two title-match spots, Meils led with 218, while Sullivan's 195 was good for second, while Knight finished in third with 173. The title match was a thriller, with Sullivan needing all ten frames to make up the 86-pin handicap difference before pulling out a 186-182 victory.
