GREEN VALLEY LANES

champs Cameron Smith and Blake Kalaf

Cameron Smith and Blake Kalaf picked up JBT titles in exciting JBT Arizona Conference action at Green Valley Lanes.

Smith tore through the scratch division stepladder for his 5th career JBT title.  He opened by defeating fellow Californian Forrest Holland 243-204.  Cameron then beat Chris Davenport 244-220, and followed with a 238-192 win over Kalyn Washburn to reach the title match.

Top qualifier Kyle King outpaced the high-scoring field by firing 798 in the semifinals.  However, Smith has proven to be a tough competitor, and when King only filled 17 in the tenth, Smith had a chance to double for the win.  Cameron calmly stood up and got the double for a 215-214 win and the championship.

Danny Varholdt opened up the similarly high-scoring handicap finals with a 234 game that eliminated Jacob Smith (218) and Jordan Vanderweyst (201).   Anthony Bonkowske, who earlier in the day fired a 299 game (Mike Cross had the event's only 300), then rolled 252 which got past Varholdt (248) and Riley Dempsey (218).  Bonkowske fell to 198 in the semis, and could only watch as red-hot Daniel Cotten blasted a 293 game with handicap- AND LOST, as Blake Kalaf came up with 267 scratch for 307 with pins to advance to the finals.

Top qualifier Gregg Kern was enjoying his best JBT event, but struggled in his first title match, and Kalaf rode the momentum from his semifinal win to a 228-204 win and his first career JBT title.

William Witt was the lucky winner of the $50 Impact Challenge Bonus- be sure to visit Impact Bowling Pro Shop at 99th Ave. and Bell in Phoenix to thanks them!

Over $2,300 in scholarships were awarded to bowlers of all ages and averages.  Big thanks to Mr. Billy O'Rourke and the crew at Green Valley for a great job hosting us.  Want in on the fun?  Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
