KEYSTONE LANES champs JR Monteith & Karlie Loop JR Monteith and Karlie Loop captured JBT titles in exciting So Cal Conference at Norwalk's Keystone Lanes. Arizonan Greg Geering opened the scratch division stepladder finals with a 253-213 win over Preston Fukumizu. Matt Jones then defeated Geering, 207-133. The semifinal match between Jones and JR Monteith was a classic power vs. power battle. After JR, the reigning all-conference Bowler of the Year, finished with 234, Jones had a chance to double for the win. After flushing the first hit, Matt couldn't get the strike, giving JR the 234-226 win, and leaving the frustrated Jones still searching for victory #1 (now go read the Sam's Town recap from the following day for the happy ending to that story). Top seed Forrest Holland was one of the many So Cal residents greatly affected by the fires that swept through the area (making bowling centers, in a delicious irony, one of the most smoke-free places around), so perhaps that was motivation for his excellent bowling which netted him the top seed. Forrest (and Matt) are always mentioned as two of our most talented non-winners, but just like in the semifinals, Monteith wanted none of that, as he bowled a confident game in a 227-204 win, good for the 8th title of his JBT career. Rebeca Reguero, the current handicap division all-conference points leader, helped that cause with a 267-167 opening round victory over Brad Hansen in the handicap stepladder finals. The next match was a squeaker, as an unfortunate 10th frame open from #3 seed Sarah Humphrey allowed Reguero to advance 206-201. The tables were turned in the next match, however, as Karlie Loop got just enough for 214-212 win over Reguero, sending Loop to her first title match. Top seed Troy Lien exploded for 279-227 his last two games of the semifinals to grab the top seed. Both he and Karlie bowled very well in the title match, but it was Loop who came up with a 9th and 10th frame double to warp things up, as her 238-223 win earned her her first career JBT title. Big thanks to Mr. Dave Piazza and everyone at Keystone for a great job hosting our Tour once again. Over $1,800 in scholarships was awarded- want in on the fun? Come on out to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
