MIRA MESA BOWL

Champs Preston Fukumizu & John Wright

Although one has been trying for a lot longer than the other, Preston Fukumizu and John Wright both captured their first JBT titles in exciting Southern California Conference action at Mira Mesa Bowl.

Lana Lycan opened up the scratch division stepladder finals with a 245-158 win over Foster Phandanouvong, who finally made his first finals of the season.  That set up a JBT rarity, as two females played each other in the scratch stepladder for the first time since season one, with Caycee Landers defeated Lycan 233-176.  Theo Douthit then put an end to ladies' day by running the front eleven before a seven-pin stopped perfection in a 299-228 win over Landers to advance to the title match.

Top seed Preston Fukumizu made some changes in his span and pitches, and used that and lots of determination to nab the top seed.  Needing a mark for the win on a pair that proved pretty tricky, Fukumizu left the 2-5-8, which he just barely made for the 212-207 win and his long awaited first career title.

Kirk Chui opened up the handicap division stepladder finals with a 234-191 win over 9 year-old Michael Johnson, who impressed all day at a 90 average.  Kirk then squeezed by Jenny Phandanouvong in a title match rematch from last season 218-213, before Christina Fraijo, coming in at the other end of the average spectrum at 192-- "any age, any average" is not just a slogan-- then edged Chui by the slimmest of margins, 205-204, to reach the title match.

Top seed John Wright came in second in his first JBT event in February, but had a rough title match.  This time, a more poised performance saw him finish with a four bagger to snag the title away from Fraijo, 234-220.  The win was the first of Wright's JBT career.

Huge thanks to Mr. John Balla for hosting us, and for being one of the biggest supporters of junior bowling in Southern California.  Over $1,600 in scholarships were awarded- want in on the fun?  Come on down to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
