Matt Jones finally captured his first JBT title, while Andrew Gottlieb added win#2 to his collection, in exciting JBT Mojave Conference action at Sam's Town.
Nathan Panaligan wowed the scratch division by opening the day with 279-279-278 for 836, tying the all-time JBT record for a 3-game series- awesome! He slowed down a bit in the semis though, but rebounded with a 225-169 win over Eddie Schaub in round one of the stepladder finals. Theo Douthit, who rolled the event's only 300 game, then defeated Panaligan 254-236. In the semifinals, Theo got by still-red-hot Kyle King 226-205 to reach the title match.
Top qualifier Jones is always in the conversation about who JBT's best non-winner is, and he thought he was going to remove that monkey the day before in So Cal, but settled for a third place finish. Here, though, he nabbed the #1 seed, and given a chance to shut out Douthit in the 10th, threw the double for the 215-206 win, and the long-awaited victory.
The handicap division stepladder finals was owned by Andrew Gottlieb, who continued a recent trend of ladder-climbers in JBT competition. He began with a 217-196 victory over Teo Cipriaso. Gottlieb then rolled past Brandon Owen 244-180, and followed with a 284-244 win over Rebeca Reguero, giving Rebeca back-to-back third place finishes on the weekend.
Top seed Cory Keraly had bowled very well all day to grab the top seed for his first time, but even moving pairs for the videotaped finals couldn't stop the Gottlieb express, and he cruised to a 238-204 title match win, and the second JBT title of his career.
A terrific "Pumpkin Hunt" was held at the event, with treats, tricks, and an extra $120 in scholarships was awarded directly through Pumpkin Prizes! Thanks very much to Scary Tami Slaonenstein for putting it all together (but not for making me wear that hat)!
