YORBA LINDA BOWL

champs Shane Peck and Caymann Huntley

Shane Peck and Caymann Huntley emerged victorious in exciting JBT Southern California Conference action at Yorba Linda Bowl.

Brad Hansen opened the handicap division’s stepladder finals with a 223-196 win over first-time finalist Sarah Humphrey.  The always-tough veteran Kaitlin Mayall then edged Hansen 215-206.  Arizonan Josh Shoup then defeated Mayll in the semis 223-181 to advance to the title match.

Top seed Caymann Huntley rebounded from a tough event the day before to lead the field today, and was able to roll by Shoup 234-202, good for the third title of his JBT career.

The scratch division used our pressure-packed Nervewracker format, where after a cut to the top 16, bowlers engaged in two-game matches that end in one-shot rolloffs if you’re tied 1-1.

Kyle Frederick didn’t win the event, but he sure was the story of the day.  In only his second regular season scratch event, he outlasted All-Conference Bowler of the Year JR Monteith in game one of round one in a two-shot rolloff, then doubled in the tenth of game two to win 246-240 to advance- and that’s just round one!  In round two, he fired 246-226 to sweep up-and-coming JBT superstar Kyle King.

In other round two matches, #3 seed Mark French blasted 268-257 to eliminate #11 Mike Cross, top seed Jeremy Glover beat #8 Kenny Beaver 228-160 and 247-226, while Peck and #7 Kris George went to the Nervewracker, with Peck escaping to advance.

The semifinal matches were classics.  In the first semi, Glover and Peck tied at 195 in game one to force a rolloff, which Peck won on the second shot.  In game two, Glover could have doubled in the tenth to force a Nervewracker, but left a 4-pin, giving Peck the sweep.  In the other semi, Frederick beat French easily in game one, but they tied at 183 in game two, forcing a one-shot rolloff that French would have to win to even get to the Nervewracker’s one-shot rolloff!  Going first, Mark struck, and Frederick struck as well.  On shot two, they both struck again.  On the third, Mark got a 9-count, and the previously untested Frederick was yet again up to the challenge, striking to eliminate French.

Shane didn't allow Kyle a chance at his heroics in the title matches, however, and the veteran stayed in control the whole time, winning both games for his 5th career JBT title.

Big thanks to Butch Hesketh and everyone else at Yorba Linda for a great job hosting our Tour.   Wanna get in on the fun?  Come on down to the next JBT event, it's as simple as that!
