TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS

champs Josh Blanchard & Nick Wade

Josh Blanchard and Nick Wade captured titles in the JBT's annual Tournament of All-Time Champions, held at Kyrene Lanes.

A large field of adult bowler alumni helped create an extremely competitive scratch division field, which was challenged by the difficult US Open lane condition.  Blanchard, a 12-time champ now bowling out of Wichita KS, and part of WSU's national championship college team, was able to meet the challenge just fine, averaging 230 for his 9 games to outdistance the field.

Another Team USA bowler, Chris Klerk, opened the stepladder finals with a 208-187 win over 21-time champ Kris George, the highest junior finisher.  Klerk then played Matt Jones- not the one often making JBT headlines these days, but the Arizona one, our 1996 Bowler of the Year, and edged him 203-196 to advance to take on top seed Blanchard.

Josh and Kris both put on an excellent display in the title match, but Blanchard was not to be denied, and his impressive 256-218 win gave him his lucky 13th JBT title.

Fresh off his win at the So Cal Invitational, Josh Shoup opened the handicap division stepladder finals with a 198-197 thriller over Jenni Cahn.  Nick Wade then turned the tables on Shoup, coming up with a one pin win of his own, 197-196, to advance to the title match.

Top seed Tim Baribeau used a big 9th game to jump into the number one seed, but had his hands full against Wade, who kept on sparing anything he left.  In the end, Nick beat Tim 228-203, good for his second career JBT title and the $400 scholarship payday.

85 champions competed in the event, which awarded over $3,000 in prizes.  Thanks as always to Kyrene for hosting us- they've been with us from the start and still do a great job.
