Big Rock's
Big Winners: Andy Byer & Andrew Quintana
The lucky name at Big Rock Casino
was 'Andrew", as both Mr. Byer and Mr. Quintana came up with victories in
JBT SW action. In the scratch division, Justin Medina got the mark in the
tenth he needed to defeat Jarrad Espinoza, who had led for much of the event,
179-173 in round one of the stepladder finals. In round two, Medina caught
fire and defeated Justin DeDera 243-204. In the semifinals, the tables
were turned as Andy Byer just got by Medina 203-193, to advance to the title
match against top qualifier William Haverland. Haverland only makes guest
appearances at JBT SW events, and that's much to the relief of the scratch
division field, as he's never not finished in the top 5 at any JBT SW
event. Big Rock was no different, as he took over in the semifinals to nab
the top seed. The title match was a tense one as both bowlers could get to
the pocket but couldn't find the carry they needed. A few brutal
nine-counts late by William gave Byer the chance in the tenth to spare-strike
for the win. After the spare, Byer threw a confident strike on the fill
ball, good for a 193-181 victory and the title. The win makes Byer the
18th bowler in JBT SW history to reach 5 career titles, and it's also his second
consecutive NM-TX win, currently known as a 'half-Baker' on Tour. The handicap
division needed more than eight games to determine our finalists, as three
bowlers tied for the eighth and final stepladder spot, forcing a rare and
exciting three way rolloff. Ten year-old Nattlee Chavez was up to the
challenge, winning the rolloff over Wendy Shelton and Amanda Johnson to advance
to the finals. In the opening stepladder match, Chavez remained tough, rolling
a big 241 to defeat Susan Kurzeka's 236 and Nattlee's friend Diamond Rapatz'
190. In round two, Christina Waldron used a 242 game to beat Michael
Valdez' 201 and to finally derail; Chavez, who bowed out with her 203.
Valdez had also thrilled the crowd with a 290 game earlier in the day. The
319 score with handicap was the 6th best in JBT SW history. In a tight
semifinal match, Camille Martinez rolled a 216 to just get by Waldron (212) and
Josh Arceo (208) to advance to the championship match. Top qualifier
Andrew Quintana had near the top of the leader board all day, and shook off the
nervousness of his first finals appearance by converting 6-7-10 split in the
second frame. He never looked back, and cruised to a 201-177 win over
Martinez, good for his first JBT SW title. Thanks to Jeff Pearce and everyone
at Big Rock for an excellent first visit to Espanola!
