AMF EAGLE

champs Kevin Valmonte and Logan Bain

Logan Bain joined the recent string of bowlers winning two events in a row, while Kevin Valmonte tasted victory for the first time, in JBT SW action at AMF Eagle.

Jared Lawrence and Cayson Coyle opened the scratch division stepladder finals in style with a tremendous match.  Both bowlers had 7 of 9 strikes going into the tenth frame, and Jared proceeded to strike out for a 258 finish, forcing Cayson to match the turkey to tie.  Coyle's first ball was high all the way but tripped the 4-7 out, but a much better second ball resulted in a 10-pin, giving Lawrence the 258-247 win in a very well bowled match.

In round two, Lawrence's carry faded, but he still struck out to put some pressure on his next opponent, Jeff Spiesman.  Jeff was up to the task, though, getting the first hit in the tenth for a 206-185 victory over Jared.  In the semifinal between Spiesman and Brian Carmichael, the good carry dried up on both bowlers, and in a pure grind, Carmichael outlasted Spiesman 183-175, to advance to the title match.

Top qualifier Kevin Valmonte had thrown two 290+ games the last two events, but hadn't finished higher than 5th in those tournaments.  This time, Kevin put it all together, easily leading the field.  He also had a relatively easy time in the final match, as he maintained his good shotmaking while Carmichael was unable to regain the form that got him to the title match.  The 225-158 final score earned Valmonte the first JBT SW title of his career.

The handicap division finals also started with a great match.  Kevin Phillips, the lowest average in the first round, threw a clutch strike to tie Kaitlin Mayall at 213, but then they both could only watch as Allie Ijams spared a 3-6 and then filled enough count for a 217 that just edged them both to advance.

Miss Ijams the turned it on in round two, rolling a big 251 that squashed the scary-good strike ball of Justen Danforth (196) and Arizonan Gerg Geering (184).  In the semifinals, Allie started to tire out, while defending champion Logan Bain came in with confidence.  IN the end, Bain's 233 was enough to defeat a 164 from Ijams and a 187 from Christina Fraijo, making her first top-5 appearance, to advance to the championship match.

Top seed Jaymes Conn was leading a JBT SW event for the first time, and had dominated most of the day as well.  However, despite a clean start including a 4-5 Connversion, Jaymes suffered opens in frames 6-9, opening the door for Bain.  Bain's double in the 9th and 10th forced Conn to do the same to win, but a 9-count on his first ball wrapped up a 193-190 win for Logan.  Everyone who bowls JBT SW events knows how hard it is to win one in either division, yet this marks the fourth time in two months that a bowler has won two events in a row (joining Kris George, BJ Baker, and Christian Jensen).

Bowlers in all divisions enjoyed the annual 'easter egg hunt', which awarded prizes and Skittles to many participants!

Thanks to Ron Weber and his staff at AMF Eagle for a great day of bowling and Easter Egg Hunting!
