champs Justin
DeDera and Josh Arceo
Justin DeDera and Josh Arceo both captured long-awaited victories in our first-ever visit to Roswell in JBT action.
DeDera used a big 245 in game 8 just to get into the finals, and then opened the stepladder with a 235-189 win over Bill Grant. In round two, Justin stayed in control and rolled to a 215-181 win over Jeremy Medina. The semifinal match against Sam Cuevas was a classic. Justin finished his tenth with 235, allowing Sam to strike out for a one-pin win. Cuevas rolled two beautiful strikes on his first two balls, but came in light on the final ball for an 8-count, giving DeDera a breathtaking 235-234 win to advance to the title match.
Top qualifier William Haverland had easily paced the field through 8-games, including a 13 out of 14 bracket wins near-sweep. Both bowlers slammed the pocket for the first nine frames and stayed clean, but William only managed one double, while De Dera doubled and tripled for a good lead. Haverland had a strike up in the tenth, and could have forced DeDera to double if he struck out, but his first ball left a brutal solid-10, locking up an eventual 236-207 win for Justin.
We like stats here at JBT SW, so here's a few numbers: Justin's last (and only previous) win was on October 13, 2001, nearly three years ago. It was tournament #91 in our history, and Roswell was event #243, so a long long drought was quenched with the victory.
In the handicap division, Christina Waldron made her first finals a success with a 227 game that defeated a 213 by last event's champ Charlie Elliott, and a 183 by Emily Milbank. Round 2 was one of our best three-person matches ever. Aaron Runions, a little guy who kept up just fine with the big boys, finished first with a terrific 239 game. Brandon Dye then filled 20 in the tenth for an excellent 242 effort. Finally, Waldron came up with a double in the tenth for a 244 game and a thrilling win.
Arceo then came on in the semifinals, rolling a 247 that was enough to defeat good efforts from Annalicia Martinez (230) and Waldron (208). The title match between Arceo and top-qualifier Jerrico Palma was close all the way, but Josh hung on to a slim lead all the way. Needing a mark in the tenth, Josh converted a five-pin for a 227-218 victory. After leading NM-TX handicap points last year without a win, it was a breakthrough- and a relief- for Arceo.
Huge thanks to Brian Casaus and everyone at Town and Country for one of the best jobs we've seen in hosting a JBT SW event, even though no aliens were spotted the whole time.
