TOURNAMENT OF ALL-TIME CHAMPIONS

champs Philip Stephens, Mathew Jones, and Kevin Saunders

In no other tournament is the JBT SW's slogan of "any age and any average" more true than our annual Tournament of All-Time Champions, where 90 bowlers from age 9 thru- well, much, much older- tried to add another JBT SW championship plaque to their collection.

In the scratch division, Nathan Panaligan, this season's Mojave Conference Bowler of the Year runner-up, opened the stepladder finals with a 235-206 win over this year's So Cal Conference Bowler of the Year, Josh Blanchard.  Panaligan then got into a battle with the previous day's AZ Invitational champ, Evan Olson.  Nathan's first strike in the tenth locked up a 233-224 win over Olson, who despite the loss easily passed the $2,000 mark in JBT scholarship earnings in only four career events- wow!

In the title match, top seed Kevin Saunders capped off a triumphant day with a convincing win.  Kevin had gone +405 for his 8-game qualifying round, and was in control for the whole match against Panaligan.  In the end, Saunders' 236-217 victory locked up his 5th career title, and second career major, having won this event last season as well!

In the handicap division, Courtney Dutton won round one of the finals with a 218-212 win over Nick Lamek, when Nick's furious comeback bid fell one strike short.  The next match was a war of attrition, which Dutton finally survived over Travis Gudelj by a 192-186 final score.

Top-seed Philip Stephens, who wrapped up the AZ handicap Bowler of the Year award the previous day with a top-5 finish at the Invitational, bowled a confident game against a tiring Dutton, and the result was a convincing 228-183 win for Stephens, good for his second career JBT SW title.

The adult division saw some of our biggest JBT SW stars come back and bowl, to the delight of the whole field.  Round one of the finals saw a renewal of a great JBT rivalry, as Rob Patterson got past Tyson Branagan, 216-176.   In round two, Mathew Jones, the 1996-97 JBT handicap Bowler of the Year, roared past Patterson 268-187.

In the final, top seed Dan Ruiz, who had grabbed the #1 spot in the final game of matchplay, couldn't get the hit he needed in the tenth frame to Match Jones' late triple, and Jones claimed a 201-198 victory, good for the third title of his JBT SW career.

In the battle of the three division winners that followed, Jones claimed the ultimate bragging rights as champion of champions as his 222 was more than our exhausted junior champions could muster.

In all, $2,550 in scholarships to juniors, and $774 in cash to adults, was awarded at the event.  Thanks again to Pat Cook and her hard working staff at Christown for a very fun event!
